Mace Group has secured its first major Building Schools for the Future commission in the Midlands with an appointment as technical adviser for the £220m Walsall BSF project. The team involved was delighted to discover the client had awarded full marks for the quality of the tender submission. Fast-tracked by Partnerships for Schools (PfS) to take part in the wave 6a programme, client Walsall Borough Council has secured Mace and Sense to deliver this wave with the option on wave 7.
The council was given the go ahead to launch its BSF programme this summer, five years ahead of schedule, reportedly because of its proven track record for delivery on large, complex projects. Initially the council will be allowed to rebuild or remodel six secondary schools with the greatest investment need. The remaining schools in the scheme will be delivered later in the programme. The council's BSF team plans to bring the whole community of Walsall together by working in partnership alongside other council departments such as regeneration, libraries, sports and leisure and housing. Plans also involve other partner agencies such as health, the voluntary sector and local businesses.
Walsall will join other local authorities in Enfield, Hounslow, North Tyneside, Rotherham, Southampton, Staffordshire and Worcestershire, all of which have been fast tracked to BSF Wave 6a. The eight councils, including Walsall, should have been part of waves seven to nine which are scheduled to start between 2010 and 2013.
