Mace Group has been shortlisted as advisor of the year at the annual Excellence in BSF awards in recognition of its successful involvement in the national programme since 2004. In addition to the overall advisor award, five projects Mace is or has been involved in have also been shortlisted for various awards including best designs for new and remodelled schools, most inspirational use of outdoor space, best BSF academy, most effective ICT partnership and local authority of the year. Chief Executive of Partnerships for Schools and chair of the judging panel, Tim Byles, announced the shortlists and said: "This year we have been very impressed by the quality of entries received from schools, from local authorities, and from the private sector, making the job of our expert panels even harder than last year."
Mace has been involved in the following shortlisted projects:
- St Mary Magdalene Academy, Islington (Principal contractor since 2005)
- Wellington Academy, Wiltshire (Project management and education advisor since 2007)
- Stoke Newington School, Hackney (Quality assurance and clerk of works since 2008)
Mace has worked with the London Borough of Soutwark, shortlisted for Local Authority of the Year, in 2007 on the early stages of their BSF programme advising them on the procurement phase requirements and helping to put together their strategic and ouline business cases and with the London Borough of Lewisham playing a key role in helping them establish an LEP to deliver its BSF programme and was instrumental in the establishment of technical and design standards for business cases and funding applications. Lewisham has been shortlisted with VT4S for the most effective ICT partnership.
Mace has been, or is, currently working on 26 Academies and 13 BSF programmes in a long-term role and many other on a consultative basis working with local authorities across the UK. Of the first 50 BSF schools that have opened in England to date, Mace was lead advisor or technical advisor (or both) on almost 20%. Mace operations director, Dave Rumsey explains: "Building Schools for the Future is so much more than a building programme, it is a change management programme: the catalyst for a massive shift in the way young people are taught. The programmes are never static, we have to keep on top of new initiatives and innovations in services such as ICT to help create the very best learning environments."
