Information
South West Trains Ltd wishes to improve retail provision at the station and commissioned Station Solutions (Mace and partner TPT in joint venture) to undertake a feasibility study to determine the options at this site. The study examined options for providing retail units using both pre-fabrication and conventional building techniques. Three principal design alternatives have been developed which would all provide quality accommodation for retailers.
Although the pedestrian bridge is used only as an interchange between platforms currently, The Metro Shopping Fund, a joint venture between Delancey and Land Securities, has proposed a mixed use residential and retail scheme which would provide 17,000m² of new shops together with over 500 new homes adjacent to the station. This development would fund significant improvements to the station, including new entrances at both ends of the pedestrian bridge, which would significantly change pedestrian flows within the station. The development scheme together with accessibility improvements delivered through the Network Rail ‘Access for All' programme would enable the existing cramped station entrance to be closed, making the bridge the focal point of the station.
