Information

To celebrate that there are now less than 1000 days to go before London opens its doors to the 2012 Olympics, BT, an official sponsor of the Games, added a 360 degree LED display screen to the top of the iconic BT Tower. Como delivered the complex fit out of this highly technical and logistically challenging project.

The LED or "information band" is made up of 177 separate panels and consists of 177,000 pixels and 529,750 LEDs installed in vertical tubes. The display covers over 280 square metres which is the equivalent to half the length of a football pitch at a height of 167 meters above street level.

As part of the Como team's installation plan, the display was fully tested at the Jules Verne climatic wind tunnel in Nantes in France for combined climatic effects including wind speeds of up to 190km per hour as well as rain, snow and high temperatures.

The installation of the 3.6 tonne information band at the top of the Tower was an extremely challenging construction and engineering task and was delivered in only 11 weeks. Despite a very tight programme and inclement weather conditions, the project was handed over to BT in time for the explosive fireworks launch on the Saturday evening ‘National Lottery Show' showing the 1000 days to go for the Olympics.

Other features:

  • 2,700 separate trips in the lift to transport materials to the top of the BT Tower
  • Scaffolding design by computer and erecting over 7 miles of scaffolding components
  • Installation of nearly 2.5 miles of power, lighting and electrical cable to the top of the BT Tower
  • 11,000 scaffold components installed at high level
