Mace's Ropemaker project has a green topping out

22/10/2008
Mace Group, its client British Land and the various main contractors celebrated the topping out of Ropemaker, an iconic commercial office building in the centre of London, on Thursday 25th September. The event commemorated the 20-storey commercial office building reaching its structural height. Designed by Arup Associates, the 586,000 square foot development is due for completion in mid-2009. In keeping with the tradition of topping out, the tightening of the bolt was completed by Stephen Hester CEO of British Land and Stephen Pycroft, CEO of Mace Group.
The Ropemaker building has strong sustainability credentials. It is on target to achieve 15% lower carbon emissions than set out in the Building Regulations and is also on target for an ‘Excellent' BREEAM rating.
A tree was planted on the 12th floor roof terrace where the reception was held and British Land, working with the Woodland Trust, has pledged to fund the planting and life-long maintenance of 1,500 trees at The Hucking Estate near Hollingbourne in Kent as part of a carbon off-setting process, equivalent to five trees for every guest that attended the event.
