Mace signs historic contract on the Shard London Bridge

26/02/2009
Construction of The Shard at London Bridge Quarter, Europe's tallest mixed-use development, is set to get underway next month following LBQ Limited's signing of the construction contract with Mace Group, giving a much needed boost to the hard pressed building and property sectors in the UK.
Mace's involvement with the Shard and London Bridge Quarter regeneration stretches back to 2004 and our role has undergone numerous changes from preconstruction engineer, to project manager, to construction manager and finally today's main contractor appointment. The announcement marks two years of Mace working closely with client, Sellar, to secure funding and the final construction contract with the LBQ partners.
The Shard forms the first phase of a £2bn London Bridge Quarter regeneration project that also includes the redevelopment of London Bridge Station concourse and the development of London Bridge Place. The London Bridge Quarter comprises approximately two million square foot of office, hotel, residential, retail and leisure accommodation. Site demolition has been completed and test piling is currently underway.
Mace Group CEO Stephen Pycroft stated in the official press release last night: "This is a fantastic milestone for our company and an encouraging sign for our industry in difficult times. Mace first became involved with the Shard four years ago and we are all delighted to conclude the negotiations so that we can get on with the challenge of building what will be a uniquely prestigious project for London."
Now the construction contract has been signed, it is anticipated that building work on the Shard will commence in early March and will be completed in Spring 2012. This contract only covers construction of the Shard. A separate contract will be let for the adjoining New London Bridge Place, comprising approximately 600,000 square foot of office space, also designed by Renzo Piano. Demolition of the site's existing building, New London Bridge House, is expected to get underway in March with construction commencing towards the end of 2009. Completion is anticipated during the third quarter of 2012.
