Mace Group gets green light for The Wellington Academy

05/06/2008
Mace has been appointed alongside Place Group by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to work with Wellington College, a top co-educational independent school, to develop the first rural academy in Wiltshire. The academy will accommodate up to 1,150 pupils including 100 boarding places and will specialise in foreign languages, business and enterprise. A new sixth form will also open for 250 students and will provide a rich blend of learning opportunities including the International Baccalaureate, A Levels and vocational diplomas. A combined cadet force is also planned with an onsite shooting range and armoury.
Mace is appointed in a project management capacity whilst Place has been engaged to provide education advice. Feasibility commenced July 2007 and was completed in March 2008 when the Secretary of State for DCSF approved the funding agreement. The project has now progressed into the implementation phase which will see the new academy opened within the existing buildings in September 2009 before transferring to new buildings by the end of 2010.
Prince Andrew is set to become president of The Wellington Academy and as such will maintain a close interest in the academy’s affairs and visit from time to time. The Duke’s appointment mirrors the role of HRH The Duke of Kent who is president of Wellington College, founded by Queen Victoria.
