Mace Group completes 2009 Serpentine Pavilion

13/07/2009
Mace has successfully completed the construction of the 2009 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in time for the key deadline of the gallery's annual summer party.
Designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA, the leading Japanese architecture practice, the new Pavilion commission forms part of an ongoing programme of temporary structures by internationally-acclaimed architects and designers. The Pavilion is sited on the gallery's lawn in Kensington Gardens and is open to the public from 12th July to 18th October 2009.
Mace was invited to work on the project by Peter Rogers of Stanhope, who act as advisors on the project. This led to Mace being appointed as construction managers of the project in March; making a commitment to achieve practical completion by the 9th July summer party date before the design was finalised. Planning was granted in mid-May, leaving only a seven week construction period.
The structure itself is a composite aluminium and plywood roof supported by stainless steel columns on temporary screw pile foundations and a concrete floor to give the effect of floating aluminium.
The external pavilion incorporates a café and an auditorium with fully integrated electrical and audio visual installations. Due to the temporary nature of the structure, Mace was instrumental in developing the design and construction methodology to ensure the pavilion is completely demountable so that it can be re-erected in its permanent home.
