Mace appointed by National Museums of Liverpool

12/02/2008

Mace has been appointed by National Museums of Liverpool (NML) as client advisor and design coordinator on a £68m project to deliver what will be one of the world's leading city history museums. The Museum of Liverpool will be housed in a new landmark building on the Mann Island site at Liverpool’s historic Pier Head which is already one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations.

With over 750,000 visitors expected each year, NML wants to provide Liverpool with a world-class museum with great contemporary architecture and fantastic collections to illustrate the city's stories through a vast wealth of collections, some of which have never been on public display. The stories to be told will combine to make up the history of Liverpool and will include exhibitions on The Beatles as well as the city's two main football clubs, Liverpool and Everton.

Design work started in April 2007 prior to a ground cutting ceremony by Lloyd Grossman as chairman of the NML. The museum will open its doors to visitors for the first time in 2010.

Approached to join the project once construction was underway, the Mace team now in place has already made a positive impact to the project by allowing the client to refocus attention on other aspects of the project, in particular the £25m exhibition fit out work.

This is the largest public sector funded project to be undertaken in Liverpool, this year's capital of culture, and is funded by the NWDA, HLF and ERDF.
