Role: Commercial Director

James joined Mace Group as a commercial director in June 2008, becoming a member of Mace Group's construction board. James has over 20 years experience in the construction industry during which he has spent his career within both the Design and Build sector and PFI sector.

 Having delivered complex projects for some extremely demanding private sector clients, James has more recently taken the commercial lead for delivering some major projects in the public sector delivering healthcare, education and custodial facilities. James has experience of fee-based, prime cost reimbursable, guaranteed maximum price and fixed price contracts, along with detailed knowledge of the different and varying demands and risks of each.

During his career James has also headed up procurement and cost planning functions and therefore has a wealth of experience at the front end of projects including the negotiations of complex contracts in both the UK and Europe.

James pays a great deal of attention to the whole of the construction process and emphasises the need for proactive commercial involvement throughout the project cycle which includes design, procurement and delivery phases. 

His experience drives him to encourage teams to plan and strategise before implementation on projects. James also believes in the integrated team approach with focus on delivery balanced with the design and commercial functions. James seeks to maximise value, efficiency and return through the teams he leads whilst fully satisfying the client's objectives and requirements.
